Cupertino, CA, United States (4E) - The iPhone X is well and truly dead and Apple, Inc confirmed the demise of its erstwhile flagship phone for 2017 with an announcement it will unleash a trio of new smartphones later this year.

The new line-up will include the largest iPhone ever; an upgraded phone with the same size as the iPhone X and a less expensive model with some of the IPhone X's key features. The new phones are aimed at Millennials and consumers that want a more affordable version of the iPhone X.

Apple will announce the new and as yet unnamed phones this fall. The reason for the abrupt demise of the iPhone X -- poor sales.

The $1,000 iPhone X, which was heavily hyped prior to its market debut in November 2017, hasn't sold as well as expected. Apple sold only 77.3 million iPhones in the final quarter of 2017, a total much lower than analysts' projections of 80.2 million units.

Many consumers were also alarmed by the iPhone X's $1,000 price tag and the phone's lack of more cutting-edge features that would have made it well worth its expensive cost, especially when compared to the cheaper iPhone 8.

Some analysts believe Apple is considering offering a dual-SIM card option for the larger model in some regions. This feature will allow people to use their phones in countries with different carrier plans without having to change SIM cards..

The three new phones will have an updated operating system called iOS 12 and code named Peace. The new OS will include upgraded augmented reality (AR) capabilities; digital health monitoring and the ability to use Animojis in FaceTime.

On the other hand, the upcoming cheaper iPhone will feature the same edge-to-edge screen as the iPhone X, as well as Face ID instead of a fingerprint sensor. The cheaper phone will use LCD screen technology similar to that in the iPhone 8. It will also have aluminum edges and a glass back like the iPhone 8.
