Nielsen's Streaming Viewership Count And Demographic Info, Now Available to Public

New York, NY, United States NY - Nielsen Holdings PLC which has been rating television programs based on viewership said it can now count the number of people viewing shows sreamed online as well.

The firm announced Wednesday its new service which can also collect and widely spread details about how many people watch programming produced by streaming services like Netflix and Amazon.

Between 12 and 13 percent of television consumption now consists of streamed programs, said Brian Fuhrer, Nielsen's senior vice president of product leadership.

Although the firm revealed that it has been capable of doing the task since 2014 but only provided reports to the streaming companies which have largely kept that information from the public.

Now, the compmany will be able to count viewership of streamed programs through an audio signature that does not need to be activated by programmers.

"When people start analyzing this, they're going to be quite surprised at the size of the audience these programs are commanding," Fuhrer said.

Nielsen's new service has so far gained subscription from eight television networks and studios, including ABC and NBC,who will now know how many people are watching shows like the "House of Cards" without constraints on the information

Aside from collecting demographic information on a show's audience, such as its preferred programs or which shows have the higest the youth, the research company will be able to measure the impact of binge-watching, too.

So far, Nielsen says it can only measure streaming viewership on television, and not on mobile devices.

But the ratings information firm has yet to dsclose the extent and the way in which it will make this information available to the public.

Nielsen has ling been engaged in measuring how many people watch regular television shows on a time-delayed basis instead on real-time in order to get a full view of the audience's televeision experience

Its method has attracted advertisers who are eager to know the volume of its audience.

Nielsen is a global information, data, and measurement company which study trends and consumers' watching habits in more than 100 countries.
