Monkeys mobbed an Indian health worker and made off with blood samples from patients who had tested positive for COVID-19 prompting fears of contamination.
The samples were taken while the health worker was walking in the campus of a state-run medical college in Meerut, 460 km (285 miles) north of Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh state.
After making off with the 3 samples the monkeys climbed up nearby trees and one then tried to chew the container.
Meerut Medical college superintendent Dheeraj Raj stated that the containers were still intact and assured that there no risk of contamination or spread.
Residents near campus feared further spread of the virus if the monkeys carried the samples into residential areas.
The 3 people whose samples were stolen were retested for the virus as a precaution.
Dr. S. K. Garg, a top official at the college clarified that it was unclear whether the monkeys could contract COVID-19 if they came into contact with infected blood.
